Thlog #1
This week was my first official week of college. Writing class was an experience like no other. Never did I expect my first assignment to be to write about myself. I discovered a lot about myself, including the fact that I don't know much about myself. I am yet to discover my writing style and the things I really do love writing about. I guess as time goes by I will find out. I did learn some very interesting things that I never really thought about before, like my process while writing. I explored concepts like "first-order thinking" and "second-order thinking" and how they apply to my previously unrecognized and unexplored process of writing. Thanks to Peter Elbow I learned a lot of my writing predispositions and how I can make sure that my mind is open to the concepts I am writing about rather than first worrying about outlines and technicalities. My favorite part of this week was discussing genres and conventions. I had never really thought about the fact that even text messages and things like Instagram captions have their own conventions and are considered genres. I thought about that a lot and decided to venture back into my old Facebook status updates and discovered how my conventions have changed through the years. I started out a very lighthearted and humorous person but recently I have become more of an activist through social media. The same goes for my previous blogging experience, although for blogging it became quite the opposite. I guess realizing that no one really cared for my blogging turned my previous activism into "bitching" about personal issues and random things that bother me. This week was indeed strange, and the things I have learned about have made it even stranger. Not that it concerns this writing class, but I also learned that dining hall food makes me sick. I've been sick thrice this week.
